Ashlee has been kept in the dark on many things for far too long. She hears voices and has been having disturbing dreams, but she along with her parents chalk it all up to a mental breakdown she's been long overdue in having over a broken engagement. She starts volunteering at a zoo to aid in her mental recovery and becomes drawn to the wolf pen. The voices she hears this time are hard to ignore as well as the attachment she feels for one particular wolf.

The voices she hears this time are hard to ignore as well as the attachment she feels for one particular wolf.

Tristan watches the woman that seems content in watching him. He wants to know more about her and becomes concerned about her health. He doesn't understand these feelings, but when he finally catches her scent the need to break free from his imprisonment becomes even more intense.

This is my first read by Ms. Royce and the first in the Westervelt Wolves series. I found the relationship between Ashlee and Tristan romantic and the intimacy is passionate. They had already established a connection early on to one another without even realizing it when Tristan was stuck in his wolf form, which makes breaking the news to Ashlee about her own heritage easier. Reading about Ashlee's reality in the beginning and then watching her transformation throughout the story to a much more secure and independent woman is wonderful.

Although the story dragged a bit in the middle, I felt that overall it could have used a little more 'meat' since there were so many interesting magical, character, and plot elements to explore and to help make the story more believable. Ashlee's acceptance of her wolf heritage and her mate were not as hard-won as I would have liked and with so many characters in one particular scene at times, it became difficult to separate personalities since some have yet to be fully established. However, I really liked the uniqueness of Ms. Royce's take on a wolf shifter story and really look forward to the next in the series as the plot continues to thicken and there are of course more Alpha males yet to fully explore. ...more

Shelves: shifters

Minor annoyances thus far:

1. First couple of chapters and the entire world and background story of these shifters is explained in a conversation. Why tell, why not just show through the story.
2. Why would Ashlee's parents, whose mom is a shifter, think Ashlee has mental issues when in fact she's half-wolf? Of course she has issues.

Things I enjoyed as the book progressed:

1. Ashlee grew a pair.
2. The use of magic for the royal shifter family. Very cool and well done.
