I loved it.

But.

This underscores what I have come to hate about the Pack. This short occurs between Magic Strikes and Magic Bleeds, and so based on what has occurred only up until that moment, what Jim knows is this: Kate put herself at tremendous risk to help the Pack. To help JIM, specifically, because the entire Midnight Games shitshow was entirely a result of Jim's poor decisions.

But.

(view spoiler)[Does the Pack feel no sense of loyalty, or obligation, to Kate? She has saved them. Literally. Saved them. Firstly, the upir and Olathe seemed to have the Pack well in hand before Kate's involvement, and without Kate, they would never even have gotten the tools they needed to defeat the upir. And that's okay, because she didn't expose herself there. But regardless, she risked herself to help them.

But at the Midnight Games - in a mess that was not at all of her making, but instead entirely of Jim and Derek's making - she put herself on the line, and exposed her existence to freaking HUGH. And she knew she was doing it, but chose to not to drop it and leave the Pack hanging. And now they are considering her a risk to the Pack? Are you fucking kidding me? What Pack? The Pack that would have been leaderless if she hadn't ended the Scarlet Star? If she hadn't fought alongside them, despite Hugh being there, because she wasn't going to abandon the people she cares about? In this short, I'm okay with Jim - he's got to inform Curran, and he seems to support Kate despite the concern - but the bit about "Mahon knows and he likes it not at all, he thinks she's a risk to the Pack" pissed me off. And frankly, in the more recent books (8 and 9), I'm pretty done with Jim too. Why can't they take one goddamn second to think? Roland was coming for them ANYWAY. Before he even knew about Kate, he was targeting the Pack because it is led by a First - he probably sent Olathe, but he DEFINITELY sent the rakshasas (and gave them the magic equivalent of a nuke to handle the Pack), and he sent Erra (the human equivalent of a nuke). Having Kate around doesn't risk drawing Roland into a fight with the Pack, assholes. He was already coming! He sent his sister to nuke you, and you think he wouldn't have come himself to sort things out after you managed to put her down? For fuck's sake!

I've come to loathe them. They use Kate. They use Curran too - they didn't even have enough respect for him and everything he sacrificed for the Pack to care for his mate for like three days before they started trying to kill her. The Pack can go fuck themselves. I'd be fine if, in the final book, Curran and Kate leave Atlanta and just let them all die. Assholes. (hide spoiler)] ...more

If so, it figures Curran's people would know everything.

I enjoy all the stories written from Curran's perspective and this one was no exception. I do wonder how Jim managed to get all that super secret intel on Kate though. It was nice to see a moment mentioned in passing in the actual novel brought to the forefront and explored in more detail. ...more
