More fantasy (and more erotic) than the Anita Blake series started with but there are strong similaraties between the lead characters - not only physical descriptions but also in terms of what drives Merry and how she handles what she faces and discovers about herself. Having said that it is quite different to the Anita Blake series and expecting more of the same may lead to dissappointment.
While I prefer fantasy more grounded than it is in the Gentry series, I picked this up and could not put i

wow
This one is not for the weak stomached. Blood and Guts may be too squeamish for some.
you have violence and sex mainly in this book.
Now if you have ever read the Anita Blake series (also by laurell).
you will find a similar theme(the sex and the string of men). But this Semi Erotic Urban Fantasy i think gives Anita a run for her money.
You are introduced to the Sidhe kingdoms, the seelie, Unseelie and the Slaugh, the goblins. tbut the esslie and the Unseelie are the main rulers (after all every

First book in a paranormal series about the fae by Laurell Hamilton, who writes the Anita Blake series. I wasn't too sure about this as I could only get through 2 1/2 of the Anita Blake books, but I was in the library and needed to find something asap as the baby was getting fussy, so I grabbed this. Really liked it, you could definately tell that it was the first book in a series though, LOTS of explaining and backstory going on, but I liked it regardless. Looking forward to the next books and ...more

Wow I can't believe that I haven't reviewed this yet. It's a fairly interesting start. I really liked the type of research Hamilton seems to have shown in this particular book. Now that's why I keep reading her books in the hopes that the next book will return to this type of quality.
This book seemed like a simple crash course to make your very own bestiary. Good plot, but (view spoiler)

Loved this start to the series. It didn't start to go downhill until 7 or 8 books in so I consider #8 the ending. Really a shame as it's such a great premise. After reading the reviews, I didn't even bother with #9.

If you're disappointed with this series, try the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire to cleanse your palate. THat said, I can recommend the series thru #8 even though that was the weakest IMO.
