While this was a good book, for most of it it felt like a completely different series than book one. Other than two of the characters having the same names nothing really carried over. Even the personalities of Gaia and Leon were unrecognizable for the first 3/4 of the book. Even with that, as I said above, this was still a good read.

I personally and politically disagreed with a lot of the things this book advocated. So, while I like Birthmarked, I'm done with this series, partially because I didn't like how different Leon was. I was rooting for Will the whole time but it was always Peter this, Leon that. Yuck. And the bad guys were advocating no sex before marriage, have lots of kids, provide a stable environment for your children to grow up in. How is that "backwards?" I know these days your a prude if you want to wait, bu I personally and politically disagreed with a lot of the things this book advocated. And the bad guys were advocating no sex before marriage, have lots of kids, provide a stable environment for your children to grow up in. How is that "backwards?" I know these days your a prude if you want to wait, but I see no problem with it. Shouldn't intimacy be a special thing? Isn't our culture demeaning women these days by telling us that we have to have perfect hair, bodies, tans, etc., because they make us desirable and sexy to men? How is sexifying women any more empowering than allowing women to make the choice of who (whom? I can never tell! Help!) to allow into their bodies? Men have fought wars over less. To me that seems like a better power than choosing whether or not to allow a child to grow within you. I know some people will disagree with me, but this is my opinion, I have thought this out, and I stand firm on it. Except in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is endangered, abortion is murder. The potential mother has already made her "choice," she chose to have unprotected sex. Again, excluding rape, incest, life-threatening pregnancy. But I seriously digress.
Back to the book, of course the bad guys also had their bad laws, but like Clare below me said, Gaia threw the baby out with the backwater as far as lawmaking and justice goes. Hmm, just realized my error, but I suppose backwater works as well as bathwater, considering how Gaia views the town and its laws. Umm, trying to think of what else to say, nothing coming to mind, I know there was more, I made sure I kept religion out of my above argument and nobody can fault me for my political views even if mine are different than their's, because everyone has a right to their opinion. I am open to friendly discussion of the topic of abortion if anyone is interested. I miss Debate sometimes but alas, I have graduated and I didn't really like the arguing part anyway. I prefer discussion to spreading, where you can actually talk about the matter instead of just randomly spewing facts that sometimes have no relevance to the actual question whatsoever, just makes the opposing team the enemy. But again, I digress. Please forgive my lack of a steady train of thought. My little choo-choo likes to travel whenever it gets the chance, and since this is the only talking I really do, this is where it comes out. And there goes my train again, wave goodbye for me. It's because it's late, I swear. It's 1:23 AM in my little corner of the world. Merry Christmas everyone, by the way. It's in a few days, but still. Hannukah has started. Happy Hannukah. Didnt love it. Gaia was annoying this book - she took stands but her reasoning was a bit odd each time, and this made for a difficult read. The love square was ridiculous and I must admit I was a little disappointed in this book.

So, I just reread Birthmarked, as I wanted to finish this series, however, after finishing it, and looking at the review of the other 2 books in the trilogy, it seems like it might not be a good use of my reading time.
