DNF: I tried, I really did, and this is the first Gena Showalter book that I couldn't finish. I really disliked it, couldn't believe or sympathise with the characters. Okay, I liked the Z man, but the story was so painfully slow, FAR too slow for my liking, and that is: if there was a story at all. This book started off with a good opener, then it slowed and droned on for a bit then about half way it started to pick up again for me. This is the first in a spin of from the Lords of the Underworld. Zacharel has always been a cold emotionless kind of guy, his opening up process was kind of shaky. Once the book actually came out, I realized that I did not particularly care to read it. It was not that I had anything against the book or the world as I adore the LOTU world, but I simply was not in the mood for any more romance and this was going to be just that. I should not have worried.

The romance simply does not exist. The romance simply does not exist. Of course, the main story is about how the knight in shining armor (angel with pretty wings) rescues the damsel in distress from her tower (the institution for the criminally insane) and helps her heal, teaches her to kick butt, and how they have their HEA, but there is no chemistry so its very easy to ignore. So I did. Shrug.

I liked the angel army whom Zacharel is leading. I liked that they always listened to him. They promptly did the opposite of what he asked, but they first had the courtesy to listen. I did like Zach and I liked him throughout. He is an angel, and yep.. he will never be sexy. No way. He's sweet, and vicious against demons. Thats about it.

I even thought the chick, Annabelle was okay. Nothing against her. She even manages to kick ass. But they are flat when put together a couple, compared even to Lysander and his Harpy. To me there was just no chemistry. They were together coz the story said so, not because they wanted it. Or maybe they did... they're just not one of those explosive couples that come alive.

The plot is good but a few things were clear right from the start to the reader while no one in the book got it. Still, overall, I did read it in a few hours and was happy with it in the end. Mostly because of the characters besides the lead couple, but hey, I do like the LOTU world and I got to explore that more. The Lords even made a cameo.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series, which will feature Koldo but I am hoping his book has more chemistry than this one, coz frankly he deserves it. Zach was arctic, and him falling for anyone was enough. Koldo is more than that, therefore he deserves better.

Still, I would not go in expecting another LOTU series, at least not yet. That too took a while to build.

Spin-off of the LOTU series. This book is waaay too similar to previous books in the original series. I felt like the author put no effort at all into the weak plot and uninspiring main characters. Maybe I've outgrown this author as I prefer the gritty action of urban fantasy novels these days. ...more

I loved this story. It was nice getting to see Zacharel again and seeing him get softer and fall for Annabelle. I cant wait for the next in this series.
