Dani as a character never bothered me in the Fever series, I actually liked her pretty well, so I was excited to see what this new book would bring to the Fever world. I have to say I was disappointed. The story to me wasn’t up to the level of Shadowfever. It was more along the lines of Darkfever, which I didn’t love. The beginning plot really dragged for me and the investigation aspect felt like a waste of time. A lot of the “revelations” felt like no duh moments.

The lack of Mac and Barrons in the story bothered me because it felt really artificial. The “icing” was affecting not only Chester’s and Ryodan, but all of Dublin. How could Mac not have been involved in the rescue of the city that she just literally saved? And how could Barrons not be an integral part of Ryodan’s investigation? They are supposed to be as thick as thieves… The end made me mad too. Yes KMM, that was a cliffhanger. How could you say it wasn’t?

I liked Dani as the narrator, but I felt that she was written a little inconsistently throughout the book. At times we were supposed to buy her as old for her years because she had to take care of herself for so long, but then at others she was foolish and headstrong just like any other 14-year-old. She is still a child; this book firmly cemented that for me. Regina said it best, “It is clear how immature she is. Dani refers to herself in the third person ‘as the mega.’ She is unable to see others’ needs in front of her own. She is unable to understand or see consequences. She prefers to approach things as a child does — snooping around and keeping secrets, rather than being upfront. She is uncomfortable at any sexual reference. She has no interest in having a boyfriend at all. She has naive ideas about what giving away her virginity will be like. And she sees herself as a superhero. These are not the thoughts and actions of a mature teenager or a mature young adult. These are the thoughts and actions of a child.” Well said Regina, well said!

Oh, and where did Dani’s inner sociopath come from? That was just thrown out there with no mention until she needed to solve the problem and then it wasn’t brought up again.

Ryodan and Christian made me feel icky. Christian has developed insta-love upon seeing Dani and plans to wait for her so that he can marry her one day. It’s creepy. His descent into Unseelie princedom was a really interesting part of the story, but it was ruined by his thoughts of Dani. Ryodan was an odd duck in this book too. Why does he really need a 14-year-old on his payroll anyways? And if he didn’t like Mac because she was unpredictable, how can he even contemplate working with Dani? Not to mention that he is creepy with her too, but then on top of that, he has no problem beating the crap out of her at times. Both guys are just icky, icky, icky. Dancer is the only one I really liked and even he makes me suspect that he isn’t entirely up front with Dani about everything.

The thing with the sidhe-seers, and Kat especially, felt misplaced… like it didn’t tie into Dani’s story at all.

Overall, I really liked about the last 100 pages of this novel, but I didn’t get what I was expecting. I wanted a fast-paced story with lots of butt-kicking, development of Dani’s character, a mentor relationship with Ryodan, and maybe some age appropriate romantic dealings with Dancer. What I got was great action at the end, pretty much nothing new with Dani, a weird and inappropriate relationship with a Barrons-wannabe, and a gross and icky possible love square. I hope the next book can redeem Dani’s story because she deserves so much better. ...more

I'm a big fan of KMM's Fever books, so I'm excited to read Iced, even though I had some misgivings about its heroine, Dani "Mega" O'Malley. Well, I should have trusted KMM's style. As usual, she has her own unique writing style: fluent, poetic, engrossing.

I'm happy that this book has many POV's, which I enjoyed better than the previous Fever books. Characters from the previous books are back, mainly Ryodan and Christian, and it's nice to listen to their thoughts. Dani is entertaining as a narrat ...more

First let me just jot a few choice highlights/gems and thoughts from my reading of Iced:

"You pissed off your potential version of Barrons."
This is a Mac/Barrons reboot, through and through. This time we may know more about what Ryodan is, but the point remains the same and that is Moning has tried to make Barrons the biggest-baddest Alpha in all of PNR and to try to do the same with Ryodan loses that element of uniqueness. I was so sad when the final book from the Fever series came out a couple of years ago but then I heard that KMM was working on a new series that will be a sort of spin-off of the Fever books. Iced finally came out on October 30/31 (of course, I had it on a pre-order). Iced focuses on the young sidh-seer, Dani O’Malley and her “future” romantic interests: Ryodan, the tough talking-sexy-unkillable club owner, and Christian, the sexy college student-druid-turned-unseelie prince. I was so sad when the final book from the Fever series came out a couple of years ago but then I heard that KMM was working on a new series that will be a sort of spin-off of the Fever books. Iced finally came out on October 30/31 (of course, I had it on a pre-order). Iced focuses on the young sidh-seer, Dani O’Malley and her “future” romantic interests: Ryodan, the tough talking-sexy-unkillable club owner, and Christian, the sexy college student-druid-turned-unseelie prince. As the release date approached there was much discussion about whether Iced was a Young Adult novel or not. I don’t understand that…anyone who has EVER read a KMM novel, knows that she writes for adults.

Now, I’ve finished the book and am rating it a 3.5 out of 5. As a KMM fan, it pains me to do that…but to be honest, there were a few times near the middle of the book that I actually thought of putting it down! I was having a hard time with all of the different Unseelie popping up (for those of you unfamiliar with the Fever world that would be “bad fairies”) and each one being more strange than the next. It got kind of old and a little ridiculous. I also (believe it or not) got tired of all the off-hand mentioning of the excessive sex going on at Ryodan’s club. I’m not a complete prude…I have read the Highlander and Black Dagger Brotherhood series after all, but in Iced, it just seemed like worthless information. I don’t know, maybe I didn’t like it because I was trying real hard to like Ryodan but he just kept using women and there’s no honor in that (even though he does admit to being “honor less”).

All of that aside, I am glad that I continued reading because by the time I got a little past half way through, the story started picking up with the storytelling and suspense that I am used to with KMM. By this point, I was back to being enthralled with KMM’s style of urban fantasy and so happy to have Iced in my hands. I thoroughly enjoyed Dani’s humor and loved poor crazy Christian. Everything suddenly came together in the last chapters, personalities finally made sense, and I found myself wanting more to the point that when I read the last line, I kept hitting my kindle screen trying to make the pages turn..just not believing that was the end of the book. I couldn’t believe that Miss KMM could be that cruel to leave us devoted readers hanging like she did….but guess what…she did!

I did miss Mac and Barrons. They each had cameo roles in Iced but it just wasn’t enough. I’m looking forward to more Mac/Barrons in the next novel as well as more of Dani. I’m looking forward to seeing where KMM goes with this character. ...more

Was worried about this one based on previous reviews. Although Dani did get on my nerves sometimes and it was a little hard to believe that these adults were chasing a 14 year old girl and asking her to be a part of their "investigating" I was still riveted. Can't wait for the next book. ...more

Liked Dani more than Mac although she is quite young-acting at times, she is funny and excitable and bouncy and lives 110% and likes killing things - she reminds me a lot of my cat Dora :) Liked Lor too, he made me laugh.
