Veil of Midnight, Bk #5 of the Midnight Breed series, follows along the same type of storyline as previous books. The Warriors, headed up by Lucan, are trying to stop Dragos from unleashing his army of Gen One vampires on an unsuspecting world.

Hero of this episode is Nikolai, one of our favorites from previous books, he is a self-confessed adrenaline junkie, maveric, combat obsessed all around good guy, who of course doesn't want a mate.

The mate in question, Renata, is being held by blackmail by

(✮✮✮✮½) I've said it with each book in this series, but this was my favorite. >.< What I liked best: The heroine, Renata, knows she's a Breedmate and the story takes place out and about. She and Nikolai make a great couple. I also like Mira and how her story played out. And, the Gen Ones were hella twisted. I loved the way we learned about Hunter and can't wait to learn more.

The narration is very well done. I plan to listen to the rest of the series instead of reading them. Hillary Huber's rasp

Nickolai is in Montreal attempting to locate Sergei Yakut to possibly form an alliance between him and the Order. With Gen Ones being killed the Order can use as many allies as it can get. Figuring a relationship between the two would be mutually beneficial the Order sends Nickolai as it's representative. What Nicolai finds is more than what he expected, both good and bad. The first literally brings him to his knees and the second turns his stomach. Two knew breed mates are introduced with some ...more

I felt that the love affair between Nik and Renata was a bit rushed. She goes from not trusting him, but attracted to sleeping with him a bit too fast. The relationships in the previous books seemed more thought out.

However, I did think that the world building in this one was kickass. This book gave some answers to things I was wondering about while at the same time opening the door for things to come.

Still, I don't think that I would want to live in a darkhaven now if I were a breedmate. Some

While this wasn't my favorite in the series it was much better than book 2 and book 4. Adrian's odd numbered books to the series seems to be better than the even numbered. It seems like a predetermined pattern in many series. I did enjoy Renata and Nico's romance to some degree though. I'm hoping that the quality in the current books goes back to this again. If you're getting bored with the series though consider taking a break for a while.
Cheers and Happy Reading!
