Epic. Awesome. Entertaining. Fabulous. Bloody.

This is a review of the audio book which clocked in at almost 22 hours of engaging, well-acted narration. I think that for me, the audio book was the way to go with this book because it kept my interest and the narrator was very successful in bringing all of the characters to life.

The book does start a little slow, but as the plots come together you will quickly get to the point where you don't want to put it down. It is definitely an anti-hero story as Locke is a thief. Stories about charming thieves are dime a dozen and Locke is definitely a charming scoundrel that gets in way over his head. But what it's interesting about this book, beyond the magical sort of Venetian settings, like something out of Assassins Creed, is how the story is told.
It's a straight up story of revenge but also of whose future revenge you are fabricating while working to get yours. I had the feeling that the story closed in a perfect circle.

And the story was interesting, but there was just TOO MUCH detail for me to wade through and still care about the actual characters in the story-- I think I would have loved this at about 300 pages less, but that's not the story this author wanted to tell. I also felt a real disconnect with Locke, and just never felt like I got to understand and therefore care about his character. I'm c ...more
