Audiobook with James Marsters as the narrator.
It was a unique and satisfying experience, James Marsters' voice bringing everything to life effortlessly and portraying Harry Dresden's dry sense of humor expertly.

There was more fantasy in StormFront than I was exepcting by the blurb, spirit bound skulls, acid spitting demons, pizza loving fae and magic amulets. Harry is a beaten down middle age PI who also happens to be a wizard with a magical council gunning for him and a less than stellar track record. To be fair there is some really witty dialogue and Harry ahs some clever moments but I think I would like him to have a bit more oomph. I would have liked at least one character to be more upbeat because

I looooved it! Why did I wait so long to read these? Harry is a refreshing voice - funny and vulnerable. He isn't cocky or imbued with superpowers. He's a wizard, but he still struggles, which made him easy to root for. Even though the baddie was a little obvious, Butcher kept me guessing with how it would all get resolved. Does it get any more exciting? The answer appears to be yes. Sign me up for the whole series!

This is the first in the Dresden files and I loved it. It's very very funny, I mean, come on there is a sex-crazed skull named Bob, who is actually a spirit caught in a skull... there is Hary Dresdan, and all the funny people around him... And there's some great fighting scenes. What's not to love?

Really enjoyed this - I think I'm in love with Harry Dresden. I love a man with a wicked sense of humour and Harry's definately got that. A man of mystery and magic. I found myself cheering Harry on (especially when he was buck naked fighting a demon *sighs*).
Harry Dresden - wizard, is called in by the police to consult on a double murder - where the couple's hearts have literally been torn out - magic is suspected and Lt Murphy wants to know how it was done. Unknown to her Harry isn't supposed ...more

For me, this book was thoroughly "OK." Decent as far as series openers go.
Sadly, I couldn't really find my way into caring one way or the other about Harry's adventure. For one, it was rather slow. There were coincidences aplenty, enough to stretch even my (usually considerable) suspension of disbelief. And at times I found Harry's inner dialogues repetitive and tiring. I remember thinking to myself at one point, "Okay, I get it, yer in trouble and have no solutions...yer friends are MIA or aga ...more

Good setting, good plot. I'll have to read more of this series at some point.
