I can't quite give Fire four stars because I was slower to become involved in this story, part of that was because I was expecting something more obviously linked to Katsa and Po's story and partly because the prologue changed those expectations again - though I appreciated it later as it tied into Fire's story and how it fit with Graceling.
However I was quickly drawn into Fire's story, again some intriguing and original concepts and Fire tackles a lot of non standard themes for a YA novel.
It's

Kristin Cashore did some marvelous things with this book:

1. She took the "being beautiful puts me in danger" trope and made it work, frighteningly so. Instead of rolling my eyes, I felt genuinely terrified for Fire in places, especially in regards to her interactions with males (like when her father hints "you have to watch out for me, too" - AUUUUUUGH). Creepy and well-done.

2. Oh, my, the relationships. How her childhood friend Archer grew increasingly possessive, how Brigan eventually softened

Not as good as Graceling and quite predictable, it was still an enjoyabe read and took less than a day to finish.

DNF - 2017

I read Graceling and loved it. It's been a few years since I read it though, so I was pleasantly surprised that Fire did not require me to remember everything that happened in Graceling. However, whatever attracted me to Graceling was not in this book. Perhaps it's listening to it instead of reading it, but I have no desire to finish even though I am pretty sure I am more than halfway through the book.

I am not sure if this is really YA. I defn liked it less than Graceling. Fire too is lacking in comparison to Katsa..and the politics and certain world aspects are boring..I would have wanted more of the romance as well.. however, it was not all bad.. I liked the monster part but felt it was not elaborated enough. It's defn worth a read :) ...more
