UPDATE 9/2/2016: 3rd Times the charm. It earned another star. So looking forward to the next ones.

UPDATE 5/28/14: I must have been in a bad mood the 1st time that I read this book. Or maybe I was pissed at yet another cliffhanger book. I won't take back my review from the 1st round but I will add that at the end of the book this time, I let out an 'f' bomb. You know "This book was ------ great!"?

Having returned to this book after discontinuing my first attempt at reading it 4 years ago, I was pleased to know that I still had a fond recollection of Kip. Kip and his snarky remarks, whether it were to his peers that resulted in a broken nose or his grandfather as he battled a regime that resulted in people getting killed, bashed or deported. It's great to see how the Blackguard trainees and inductees grow into themselves from awkward pubescent teenagers wallowing in their own personal dile ...more

It's a wonderful world that Brent Weeks has created with rules and regulations. It has a somewhat light mathematical structure like you would expect of a science fiction novel. I personally loved it but the characters are not as likable as his other series. I feel that the author slacked in the quality of his writing and some editing would not have gone amiss yet I wished that the story lasted longer.

I will nevertheless read the next book because I have to know what comes next. ...more
