That’s the premise of Elizabeth Hunter’s first book in an all-new vampire series – The Firebird and the Wolf – that is set in her Elemental World universe. The MMC, Oleg Sokolov, was featured as a supporting character in a number of previous books of the series, and he was portrayed as an ancient and ruthless, but honorable, fire vampire, and I found him rather intriguing, so I was looking forward to him getting his own story. And though for such an old dude his attitude towards women is unexpectedly progressive, his world view overall is still rather paternalistic.

I also liked the characterisation of the FMC, Tatyana Vorona. She was forced to take on responsibility for her mother at a young age, and so she is very self-sufficient and confident in her professional abilities and she knows what she wants (in men). On the other hand she sometimes also gets scared by her own boldness.

As was bound to happen, Oleg is instantly charmed by his prickly accountant and Tatyana finds herself unable (and unwilling) to resist his charm. It’s only gradually that Tatyana realises that Oleg isn’t a man at all, but something way more dangerous. This doesn’t diminish her attraction to him, though. But complicating matters is the fact that Oleg is embroiled in a dispute with another vampire to whom he has familial ties, and Tatyana soon finds herself at the centre of the conflict…

Quite a spectacular start to this new series and I found it particularly refreshing that Tatyana doesn’t let herself be subsumed under Oleg so easily. Loved this first part of the story and I am eagerly looking forward to the merry chase which Tatyana is going to lead Oleg on! ...more
