Sometimes you come across a book and you just know you have to read it because it sounds too interesting to pass up. That’s what happened to me with A FERRY OF BONES AND GOLD. I had never read Hailey Turner, never even heard of her actually, but once I looked up her backlist I saw a ton of books that I probably would be interested in reading. Lately I have seen a tendency in published books that I can only described as "is the Editor of this book in the room with us?" (See also: RF Kuang)
This book has a slight case of it, it is moslty noticeable in entire paragraphs that have no reason to be there, some phrases we could all live without, and some clear author-on-soap-box moments, I could do without personally, but all in all I enjoyed this book quite a lot.

I liked the characters a lot. Patrick’s deep brokenness was explained well, although the hints at alcoholism made no sense. We never saw him drinking to excess even though he did drink a shot or two on a rare occasion. We got a lot less insight into Jona. There was a glimpse into the pain he felt from his past but I wanted more. His language as a Brit was well done.
