Really enjoyed this one. Wonderful characters in Aislinn, Seth, Keenan and Donia. I read a couple of reviews that said they didn't feel the humans were as well developed as the faeries, but I don't agree with that. You got more background on the faeries simply because they require explanation where as humans do not. I think the relationship between Ash and Seth was well developed and sweet. Wow. This book is very similar to Lament by Stiefvater. I believe I liked Lament better. The idea of people becoming fairies let alone fairy Queens is a little far fetched. I could see the marriage to a King making one a Queen, but just taking another's place just seemed a little off. I did enjoy the story and may read the sequels. ...more

I don't usually read books about faeries, so this sat on my TBR shelf for ages before I finally picked it up. I was worried that it would be too fantasy based, but I really enjoyed it. Melissa Marr has created a well defined and realistic world that is easy to fall into along with likeable characters and a great storyline. I was glad to see that the book is gradually developed with no info dumping, and a few unexpected twists spread throughout.

I really like that Aislinn grows as a character through the book, gradually learning to stick up for herself. I've read too many books with heroines that only fight for their hero and won't stand up for themselves, but this isn't one of them. I loved the fact that Seth isn't the conventional preppy clean cut love interest that seems so common in young adult books these days - he has tattoos, piercings and a pet boa although thankfully he doesn't come across as a cliche. Keenan was exactly as I expected a faery King to be - but the other faeries, especially Donia really came into their own and caught my attention.

One thing I do love about this book is the cover - it's so beautiful and evocative (and is the main reason I brought the book), and really fits the storyline. Sometimes a cover won't match the book well, or a so-so book will have an incredible cover or even a great book with an awful cover. This is a great book with a gorgeous cover - just one case where judging a book by its cover is pretty accurate.

All in all I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to reading the next four books in the series: Ink Exchange, Fragile Eternity, Radiant Shadows and the final book, out in March, Darkest Mercy.

Another good one. And I loved the characters - Ash is a great man character and I was so glad to see the choice she made. Not quite the pairing I was expecting so definitely a nice and surprising change. Loving Seth at the moment (piercings are ridiculously yum)...not sure about Keenan.
