What Members Thought

Still as enthralling and brutal as the first time I read it, this story takes a dark turn and puts Mercy through a lot.
This time she is asked to help the fae with an investigation into who is killing off some of theirs, and Mercy, who needs to repay a debt to the fae, agrees and so begins the series of events that leads to her (view spoiler) .
It is dark and painful, but ends in a hopeful note, with (view spoiler) ...more

Mercy Thompson is one of those iconic urban fantasy series that I've been "fixin' to" read for a very long time now. I finally crossed the threshold into Mercy's territory when the GR group Serious Overload of Series picked it up for their series read this year.
This third installment was a one-night read. Mercy gets involved in fae matters, as she returns a favor for her old friend Zee and accompanies him to the fae reservation to sniff out a serial killer. The irony of a Native woman going into ...more

I loved this - I read it on the heels of Blood Bound and enjoyed the switch of focus from the vampire to the fae. There are some dark moments in this book that I think Briggs handled quite well without being explicit at all (an interesting choice in the PN genre where explicitness is usually revelled in). Mercy continues to make considered, if not smart, decisions in order to support and protect those she is loyal too. She takes responsibility for those choices too which is admirable.

This was my favorite Mercy Thompson book yet. Whenever I want to totally lose myself in fiction, I find myself more and more reaching for this series. I get so engrossed in the interesting characters, well-developed world, history and stories, that I breeze right through these. I also appreciated that we got to see Mercy as truly vulnerable in this book, and learned some really important things about Ben and Samuel and Adam that redefine their relationships moving forward in the series. Mercy rocks! Like any Urban Fantasy protagonist, she is badass and kicks major evildoer butt. Seriously, she doesn't exactly go looking for violence but when she dishes it out she can be pretty damn brutal, and rest assured they definitely had it coming!
What makes her special is that she has believable weaknesses and contradictions just like the rest of us. When she's really upset, this girl bakes brownies and watches bad movies.

I couldn't remember much from the first time I read this book because I originally read it in one sitting well into the night. This time, I listened to the book well into the night again. The reader, Lorelei King, was very good at bringing all the characters to life.
Next up is Bone Crossed.
