**6.12.2011 ETA: Finished book three and this is one of the most frustrating YA series I've read to date. If you've no tolerance for angsty, bratty, obtuse heroines, steer right clear of it.**
**3.5-ish?**
Julie Kagawa’s YA novel is an interesting treatment of Celtic legend, with characters reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and the movie Labyrinth. Kagawa’s vision of Faerie (or the NeverNever) is fully-realized and her particular talent lies in description--her world feels incredibly alive. I can ...more

3.5 stars. Beginning of story sounded vaguely familiar, similar to Wicked Lovely and maybe Tithe. It wasn't a bad book, but just not great and the love story was a little too vague for my taste. Are they involved or not?!

The reason I rated this story so high was sheer entertainment value. Candy for my brain, if you will. I really enjoyed the plot and especially the conflict, which while not exactly original, was definitely intriguing.
Meghan was an interesting character. I liked that she had flaws, but she did tread near Mary-Sue territory a few times. I liked Robbie and preferred him to Ash, the somber, brooding "I'm too sexy for this sword" guy (although he was a faery prince so I guess it fits).

First impressions: Meghan is a sweet girl, although somewhat invisible to the people around her. She's ignored or taunted at school, she lives on a hog farm thanks to her new stepdad, and she has a quirky male best friend who never lets her see where he lives. With her 16th birthday coming up, her life felt vaguely reminiscent of a Molly Ringwald movie (or, say, all of them).

I was really looking forward to this book as I've been on a sic-fi/fantasy faerie kick lately. But, I was disappointed. I felt like too much of the story line was predictable and the author created a sort of mish-mash of mystical beings. Younger readers (ages 13-18) may enjoy the book more though.
