I wanted to read this book, and I picked it up a few times and put it back down. I was afraid I wouldn't like it as much as the Darkest Powers books. Once I got past that fear I loved this book. Maya was pretty awesome! She is adopted, but happy and loved, she likes where she lives and has an afinity for animals. She takes care of injured animals and releases them back into the wild. Although the writing is good, it felt like it was all loose ends and no wrap up at all. Although I knew it was the first of a trilogy, it felt as if she just reached a certain number of pages and stopped, rather than having found a truly natural break in the story line. Liked this a lot, every time I think I've gone off shifters, Kelley Armstrong pulls me back in :) Also liked the ?medical experimentation aspect. Liked the characters, especially Mayas parents. Really cool setting, we don't have big animals here in New Zealand, so I liked hearing about cougars, bears, bob-cats, martens... all sorts of wildlife. The story was a bit all-over-the-place with lots of filling in the blanks and creating new ones, but this was a great start to a series I will defin ...more
