The YA I've been reading lately has been on the impressive side. Lily is sent to boarding school in Chicago when her parents head for Germany for work. She quickly makes friends with her suitemate, Scout. When Scout keeps mysteriously disappearing, Lily gets curious and finds out the world is more interesting than she knew.

What I enjoyed:
* Lily. She seems pretty realistic in her thoughts and actions. I like how she doesn't immediately believe in magic.

Considering this is the first book in new series it's not bad. The characters are interesting enough. I would have enjoyed a faster pace with much more back story on the reapers. When they first introduced sebastian's character I found him to be of interest and was disappointed the writer had not given something more to tempt us. Reading the synopsis of the next book, hexbound, I am thrilled that they will give him a more up front character introduction for the sequel as well as possibly future ...more

Firespell is about a young teen named, Lily Parker. Her parents go on sabbatical in Germany and instead of taking her along, they decide to enroll her into a private school. A boarding school no less, in Chicago (she is from Sagamore, New York), St. Sophia's.

The school has the typical stiff (erm. cold shouldered?) headmistress, posh spoiled rich girls, and a few misfits thrown into the mix.
