The last book, Kiss of Death, didn’t thrill me. Sure, it had some tense scenes, but removing the foursome from Morganville robbed the story of much of its relevance to the series. It also deprived me of Myrnin - a big negative in my mind.

Ghost Town brings the setting back to Morganville. With the familiar scenery in place, the characters can get back to doing what they do best: fighting off vampires, dealing with political upheavals, and shielding their eyes from Myrnin’s suspect fashion choice The last book, Kiss of Death, didn’t thrill me. Sure, it had some tense scenes, but removing the foursome from Morganville robbed the story of much of its relevance to the series. It also deprived me of Myrnin - a big negative in my mind.

Ghost Town brings the setting back to Morganville. With the familiar scenery in place, the characters can get back to doing what they do best: fighting off vampires, dealing with political upheavals, and shielding their eyes from Myrnin’s suspect fashion choices.

I’ve noted before that Caine excels at creating suspenseful action sequences. She’s also adept at pulling on the heartstrings - a skill she calls upon several times as the residents of the town forget who and what they are. It’s difficult to watch the characters we’ve come to know and care about lose their sense of self, slowly whittling down the number of people Claire can depend on to help her put things to right.

In the face of such an unstable situation, Claire frequently starts to break down. I’m actually thankful for this turn of events, as previous installments often painted Claire as a little too capable in the face of danger. Granted, she’s getting older and her time in Morganville has taught her a survivor’s mentality, but the reminder of her humanity and youth was a welcome one.

Although I enjoyed Ghost Town, I had the repeated feeling of déjà vu. The loss of memory, of self, is not a new plot point, despite the different circumstances surrounding this instance. Nor is Myrnin turning loopy something drastically different (he’s never going to be the full shilling - and I love him for it). Caine definitely needs some new blood (pun intended) brought into this series before the themes become stale and overused. There is one element of the final chapters that I can see adding fun to the series…or simply leading to a rehash of the story arc we’ve just left behind. Only time will tell.

Still, this entry does introduce changes to the vampire/human town and opens the door to further political intrigue (always a plus). Claire’s responsibilities also continue to grow and change which can only make her life more dangerous - and therefore, more interesting to read about. My hope is that Caine grabs hold of these developments and keeps pushing the proverbial envelope, because for Morganville (and this series) to survive, something very new and exciting needs to be introduced.

Morganville has been left vulnerable ever since the vampire computer Ada went nuts and died. Claire has been tasked with building and programming a new computer to protect the town, preferably one that doesn't require an actual brain. But as soon as Claire gets the new computer online people start to forget. Vampires don't know they are vampires, humans don't know where they are and soon more and more people are lost. Claire needs to figure out a solution before she forgets how to save Morganvil ...more

Everyone goes a bit mental after Myrnin loses the plot, and it is up to Claire to save Morganville...

Another excellent book, still really enjoying this series. Claire seems to be growing up a bit too - well they all are. Highly recommended series.

Everyone, except Claire, lost their memories of the last 3 years. So most of the gang thought they were still in high school. No one knew who Claire was and Mernin was very scary. The machine they fixed to keep the people and vampires in seems to be to blame. The balance of power is going to change....
