I read this book in three hours and was whimpering the closer I came to the last page. I just didn't want this story to end. Marissa (Rissa) is a Fury. In MacKenzie's world a Fury is a sort of uber otherworldly police slash peace keeper. She is ostracized from what living family she has and is pretty much a loner. A tragedy a few years back took her best friend as well as her lover (as circumstances played out), leaving her hyper focused on the past and unwilling/unable to look to the future.

The world was interesting and I enjoyed the different mix of arcane races in this book, among them are Furies, Warhounds and Oracles. Instead of three furies, there are three types of fury. The Furies have maintained the peace between mortals and arcane since the end of the War. Marissa is the Chief Magical Investigator assigned to the police department. Humm... I actually started reading this book a few weeks back and switch to several other books before coming back. I have to agree with some comments on this book. I was bored with the first half. I almost didn't pick it up again today.

The story is good. The way it was narrated is good... As far an I'm concerned, it was written well. I don't really know what it is that got me bored... However once the action and plot thickening started, I couldn't put it down because my curiosity kicked in.

It was a 3.5 star read but got the extra half star for having some unusual paranormals (furies, harpies, giants, warhounds, etc), which was a nice change. Good story. I liked the heroine and hero as well as the assorted supporting characters. Very interesting world that I'm looking forward to revisiting soon. I did figure out who the bad guy was way before Rissa, but I figure she was just too busy staying alive to have the time to think about it. ...more
