The main character, Madison, is dead - in the various infodumps scattered throughout the book, it is said that she stole a reaper's amulet during her death, which gave her the solid illusion of a body. Now she's trying to save others from dying before their time, which turned into a convoluted plot about trying to find the reaper who killed her (with bonus love interest!), which became completely ridiculous.

I've enjoyed Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan/Hollows series and decided to try out her YA book. Madison is very much like Rachel, things just seem to happen to her. When Grace came on the scene I instantly thought of Jenks with her funny limericks, her naughty deeds and pixie-like stature.
The premise sort of reminded me of a TV programme called Dead Like Me but this book was slightly more complicated. Reapers are angels of death who are given amulets which give them magical abilities by human time ...more

As a big fan of Kim Harrison's Hollow/Rachel Morgan series, I was hoping I would enjoy her new YA series. Kim Harrison goes into SO much detail in her other series that I was completely surprised by the lack of detail in this one. The main character is dead, but you don't learn about how that occurred until midway through the book. There are several instances where the lack of history between the two opening characters (Madison & Barnabas) makes things feel disjointed or like this was a second b

Probably 3.5 stars. It was okay. I like Kim Harrison's narrative voice, and so I enjoyed the book. But I was a bit confused by the ending. I am not sure that I entirely understand what happened. Nor do I feel like I have a really good grip on who "the bad guys" are, or what they want.

I just can't get into this book. After two weeks of trying, I'm giving up. I'll stick with the Rachel Morgan series.

Honestly I just wasn't into this series. I felt that Harrison just doesn't have any faith in this generations teenagers. I've met some that make rocks look smart. This book reflected that in the characters. While the concept was interesting I thought it might have been better if this had been written for adults. Please Harrison don't doubt today's youth, they're smarter than we think. They just have hormone fluctuations. This would probably be an all right read for ninth and tenth graders.
