I had such high hopes for this book, and they were all dashed. On the positive side, Sookie's voice is more clear and true than in the previous two installments. Unfortunately the book reads like 7 or 8 subplots fighting it out to decide which one will be the main plot. Unfortunately, it's a stalemate, and the result is a novel that is a chore to get through. When reading the book after watching the TV Series, you have to find yourself distancing from what you saw as the book is A) at a different level and B) there are some distinct differences. In Dead in the Family, Sookie and Jason are reeling from what looks to be another Supernatural War. This time between Faes and other supes. In the War, Sookie lost not only her best friend and Cousin Claudine but also her fairy godmother literally. We are reunited with familiar faces including Jason, Sam, Eri

I loved this book. I just finished Rachel Vincent's Shift which I also loved. But Charlaine Harris' book is such a feel good book. It ends on a positive note. While Rachel Vincent is adventure and never a dull moment in that book, Charlaine Harris is light and romantic with a touch of adventure and drama to keep it interesting. I'm thinking like the Jan Karon of the vampire world. She might be my favorite.
