Wow. This was a really fun new fantasy that I just could not put down.
The pacing was break-neck. And by that I mean that the plot of this book could easily spread across two books in the series. I am shocked at how much we got through, because I didn't expect what happened in the end of this book to happen until a bit further down the road.
That's not really a criticism - the pacing is part of what made it so riveting. But I think there were places where we whipped through a little too fast, and ...more

I have previously read and really enjoyed Jennifer’s Mythos Academy series and I’ve read one of her Bigtime books as well. Kind of think Game of Thrones if it was set sometime in the 1800s and if the focus was on a much older Arya and if things weren’t quite so brutal and if all the characters had magic. I

Really enjoyed this story and am excited for book 2. I like Winter and this so was rooting for the Winter Queen regardless:) Not that into the gladiator aspect, and a bit odd that someone completely untrained in magic can figure it out in the middle of a fight to the death with a strong and experienced magic user but enjoyed reading anyway.
