The beginning of the paper magician was a bit slow, specially with Ceony being such a brat but it definitely grew on me by the end.
In this world, magicians are tied to man made elements: metal, glass, paper, etc. Even though she dreamed of doing metal magic, Ceony is assigned to paper, the least glamorous of them all. I got a little stuck in Thane's heart in the middle of the book, but I persevered, along with Ceony and the paper doggie, and we made it out safe and sound, if a little bloody on the edges. I loved the magic system and the world that author Holmberg creates here - a genteel, Victorian feel to a world populated by magicians who are bound to one artificial element - steel, glass, paper, plastic, rubber. Ceony is apprenticed to a paper magician, and although she is dismissive of ...more
