4 stars - A sumptuous tapestry of storytelling that unfolds like a fine wine

Matthew de Clermont, Diana Bishop, Marcus MacNeil, & Phoebe Taylor
We saw Marcus and Phoebe fall in love in the original trilogy, that Phoebe made the decision to become a vampire, that Diana had the twins, and we knew that Matthew was Marcus' father.

I found this book boring. There wasn't any of the excitement, adventure or mystery of the previous books. An entire book dedicated to Marcus ... boring. I tried to read his history but wasn't remotely intrigued or interested.

I really enjoyed the original series, so this came as rather a disappointment. It's interesting enough to read Marcus's history and see how Phoebe and the twins are getting on, but there was nothing that gripped me about any of these storylines. No one was in peril, there was no big adventure, and even one character's hospitalisation was dismissed immediately with one sentence. Harkness can write and has proved she has interesting ideas. I hope this is just the set-up book for better adventures
