I've come to the conclusion that I really like funny, OTT books, not so much the silly kind but genuinely funny and creative. And this is another series that I'm going to love as well. I've previously read one of the novellas and loved it so much I've been collecting the books.

The world building carries through the series with all the different supes but the characters not so much. A pity as I really loved Bailey, the Calamity Queen. This episode features Gorgons, not a supe that gets very many ...more

The comedy fell a little flat for me. And while I thought the FMC was awesome, her self-esteem was unbelievably bad. Like, I get her parents were shit, but I don't see how it gets this far from that. Not when she's been away from them for so long.

I don't get what happened in the coffee shop in the beginning. Why did no one show up for work? Even knowing, in the end, why Mary left ... why did she stay gone? And no one else come in for their shift? I had a really hard time with this one, honestly.

I don't like how anyone in the book treated the FMC. And that includes the MMC. I don't understand how all these people who seem to care about her in some weird withdrawn way ... didn't visit her in the hospital (even the nurses felt weird that she had no visitors, we're told), or do anything to help her situation... so much so that when she is finally released the first time, she has no home because they napalmed it (no one told her, either), no purse, no ID, no money, no credit cards, no clothes... literally fucking nothing. She's discharged from the hospital, still sick, and dropped in that situation with no one even warning her, much less helping her. She was in the hospital for a month! The Chief of Fucking Police - who we're supposed to believe has been obsessively in love with her for literally years - can't get the ball rolling on getting her ID and replacement credit cards? Have a plan for where she will live? After all, he was in charge of the site and gave the order to burn her place down, for fuck's sake.

So there was this weird overlay of ... all these people are fuckheads, and I don't like the lead male, and I don't believe any of them care about her, and I don't want this awesome lead female to stay in this life at all. Like, time to leave town.

And that's without even getting into the way the CDC and police acted like they own her. Seriously, she does not work for them and they order her to sites when she's tired and hurting after the last one, and won't take no for an answer. The head of the CDC even arranges for her to be prostituted to a man who tried to rape her. I don't give a fuck WHO that guy is, he tried to rape her, tried to rape a bunch of people that he admitted - on body camera - that he petrified when they declined him. How is this motherfucker not in JAIL, much less demanding he be allowed to buy her. She doesn't even work for the fucking CDC, she's a freelancer! But this book insists that she doesn't fucking get to say no.

What. The. Fuck?

So honestly, even though I wanted to like it, this book actually pissed me off a lot. I don't think I'm going to read onward in the series. ...more

Bailey's dreams come true when the guy she has been lusting after shows an interest in her, but she has to deal with mass cleanup and his crazy family.

What I enjoyed:
* When Bailey turned into a cindercorn, hilarity followed
* Bailey's interactions with the cops were fun
* I like that Quinn realizes the importance of communication

What could have been better:
* I don't need a recap of what has been happening in the book I'm currently reading
* Quinn's family is so over the top (view spoiler) ...more
