Set in Victorian England, Charlie (Charlotte Holloway) was thrown out of home & lived on the streets for 5 yrs, as a 13 yr old boy.
This was a fairly complex plot regarding the world-building with Charlie being a Necromancer & her father a local vicar who thought she was possessed by the devil, hence her banishment to the streets.

I liked what I thought was the premise of this book -- sort of a supernatural Avengers -- but that wasn't what this book was about. There was little to no supernatural anything, the characters were largely unlikeable, and the story was just... odd. Pretty cover though!

For a girl that lived on the harsh London streets as a boy for 5 years, she sure is squeamish over everything. All someone has to do is mention brains and she's 'swallowing back bile' and trying not to 'toss her lunch' or her stomach is lurching. Any mention of gore or body parts and she became nearly sick every time. One would think she had seen some pretty crazy stuff on those streets, especially during that time period.

I keep wavering between 2.5 & 3 stars. This was a decent start to a new series and the first half really intrigued me, but somewhere along the way it went a little off. Technically, I wouldn't really call it Steampunk (the shelf I found it on), but it did have a bit of that vibe. FYI, this did not affect my rating of the book.
