I truly read my books cover to cover. The dedication of this book to Patty's husband, Mike, made me cry before I even started it. Mike died very suddenly last March. Even the opening lines of the book got to me. I had to put the book down and walk away for about half an hour before I could even start reading.

Bran is out of town (out of the country?) and has left Charles in charge of the Aspen Creek pack. He and Anna work at keeping peace and calm among the members even as Leah tries to undermine Charles. May I say here that I really dislike Leah? I simply do not see her appeal to Bran. Charles receives a phone call from Jonesy, the mate of wilding Hester. Wildings are wolves that are too broken to be a part of a pack but still fall under the Marrok's care. A trip to the depths of the forest finds Hester dead, a complex spy operation and clues of a traitor.

A decision is made to inform all of the wildings of the situation. Teams are created which pairs Anna with Asil. This is, of course, Leah's doing. May I say again that I really don't like Leah?

Asil was a bigger part of the story line than he usually is. I must say that the Mad Moor intrigues me. He is so scary that he fascinates me. I think that he and Anna make a formidable pair.

Charles and Anna are one of my favorite couples. I enjoy the nuance of their relationship and how it affects the pack as a whole.

Bran's disappearance and silence is a little strange. I understand how it fits into the timeline of the Mercy world but felt that it could have been resolved. Speaking of Mercy, I'm just about speechless over certain comments that I may have misconstrued. I guess we will see what happens with that.

Overall, this is a very good addition to the story. I'm glad that I read Silence Fallen before this book as a point of reference with Bran.

I recommend anything and all books in the Mercy/Alpha Omega universe. ...more

Wow, this really opened up the world and while it ended the story nicely, it is wide open to continue the newly revealed plot (and I really hope it does).

Anna and Charles are a great couple and it is always good to see them together. We also finally get to see Leah in a more meaty role and learn more about her. Plus we learn there are Wilding wolves (older and not totally under control) under Bran's protection kept hidden but nearby his pack.

I always anticipate a new Patricia Briggs book and this one was no exception. I love the shared Mercy/Alpha & Omega world and what I enjoyed in this book was seeing more of it. In this book we get to know more about the "wildings" who live hidden on Bran's land. They aren't quite part of the pack but they are Bran's wolves. I really enjoyed this part, getting to know these wolves who were broken and dangerous and fragile all at once. Seeing more of Bran's pack in general was also interesting as I always anticipate a new Patricia Briggs book and this one was no exception. I love the shared Mercy/Alpha & Omega world and what I enjoyed in this book was seeing more of it. In this book we get to know more about the "wildings" who live hidden on Bran's land. Seeing more of Bran's pack in general was also interesting as typically most of the action has taken place with Anna & Charles on the road or through Mercy's eyes.

I also liked that we got some additional POVs, Bran & Leah both had POV scenes, even if they were pretty brief. I think we've seen a Bran POV before, at least in one of the short stories, but Leah really interested me in this book. I feel like we got to know her better and it fleshed out her character from just being the one who hates Mercy.

A couple of things prevented this from being a 5 star read. One I'll put behind a spoiler tag even though it takes place early in the book. It's not a spoiler for this plot but may be for the series so I'll be cautious (view spoiler) The other thing is something I can't quite put my finger on but it's mainly about how women characters are treated in this universe. Both Mercy & Anna have no real female friends, most of the other women in this world are somehow jealous or otherwise bitchy about them. It's something that might not stand out in one book but has been vaguely itching at me when I read this series. Anyway, there's a lot I love about these books (obviously, I had this pre-ordered) but that's just something that bugs me when I think too closely about it. ...more

I'm absolutely ecstatic that my 500th book is this one because this series is by far one of my favorites, and it feels like fate that this happened. I don't know what it is about Anna and Charles but I absolutely adore both of them. I honestly have never been sad about finishing a book so quickly and that is literally the only reason it took me so long to finish because I didn't want the adventure to end. Overall I completely enjoyed this book though I do share the same complaint as many longtime fans of the series. Since I prefer to keep this spoiler free I won't elaborate but I will say while I don't agree with "the statement"it's not enough for me to pull out my pitchfork and stop reading these and the Mercy books and I hope the majority of us feel the same. ...more
