When I read a new book by an author I’ve enjoyed before, I tried not to compare it to his past books. However, it was difficult not to do this here because Armada has many many similarities with Ready Player One, Ernest Cline’s debut novel: video-game obsessed young man learns all about 80s pop culture due to (second) obsession with a dead man and uses said video game skills to save the day. This book reminds me of when my husband and I sit around talking about the books that he is going to write some day. It starts off with a vaguely interesting idea, and then we keep adding more and more ludicrous plot points until we laugh and laugh, and the book never gets talked about again.

I was hopeful that Cline would be more than a one-trick pony 'cause I would have liked to add him to my list of favorite authors.

Sadly, this book was cliché, repetitive, and just plain boring. I may have actually laughed out loud when Wil Wheaton spent

A disappointing second book from Cline and I would have rated in lower expect that I did love his first book. Far too predictable and used far too many overused tropes with nothing new to say.
