Seanan McGuire is consistently proving she's at the top of the heap when it comes to Urban Fantasy and Chimes at Midnight helps her to slide a little higher. It didn't unseat Ashes of Honor or Late Eclipses as a new favorite and it wasn't quite as high on the emotional impact scale as the previous three books, but I think it was the story that Toby needed. She has been through so much in the past few books and this book kind of ...more

This remains one of the best fantasy series out there--without any qualification on whattype of fantasy. The integration of faery into our world is done flawlessly.
I am on my knees in gratitude to Seanan McGuire for not including cliffhangers (she seems to trust her writing enough to know we'll be back for more) and no stupid love-triangle. Thank you!
I look forward to more of anything this woman writes. You should as well.

Totally awesome book. I don't know how Ms. McGuire always comes up with these difficult fixes that seem impossible for Toby to overcome so you're scared for every second of the book.
One thing that bothered me was how Tybalt just seem to be almost another squire. He's a King of Cats, he's supposed to help with solutions and come up with ideas. I know that Toby is the main character but Ms. McGuire needs to find a way for him to be a partner to Toby and not an errand boy. See Curran or Adam...they ...more

Another adventure for Toby who manages to get herself deep in trouble once again.
In an effort to stop goblin fruit, a highly addictive drug that kills changelings in the area, Toby goes to the Queen of Mists, who (view spoiler) has no intention of helping. On the contrary, she exiles Toby, giving her three days to pack up and leave everyone she knows behind.

4.5 rounded up
Lots of action, danger, peril, intrigue, impossible to get out of situations, in short a standard October Daye book. It's weird to have Tybalt and October in love and knowing it. There was something so romantic about how he would just appear and be upset that she was in trouble while trying not to show it and her being oblivious.
But it's still good. I really like the non sexist plots--both female and male guards and rulers and baddies and goodies. One of the main characters is a l ...more

I'll start with the short story, "Never Shines the Sun." In the span of a mere nine pages, McGuire raises countless questions, beefs up the universe's mythology, and heaps on the character development. It's a thought-provoking piece from an unusual POV. I'm thrilled that it's included in this volume.
The short builds upon the most compelling aspects of Chimes at Midnight (and the series at large): the central themes of parentage and destiny. In attempting to verify someone else's background and b ...more
