This is an excellent attempt to create a darker story in a setting a bit like Harry Potter's world.
The Magisterium is the school for mages, and you have little choice about whether to go there. If you're not successful at controlling your powers, at the end of your first year, they are locked away from you and you're sent home, never to use magic again. If you make it past that first hurdle, you're on the way to being powerful and wonderful, only...not everyone has a happy ending.

Enjoyable magic boarding school story. I thought I had guessed the twist, but was deliciously surprised to find I had not.
