I really wanted this book to be more likeable based on the reviews. But I struggled to get through it. I did like some of the characters... well, really all of them except Duchess. The story just dragged on for me. I live historical fiction, this just didn't do it for me. It held enough attention for me to finish the book which is why I gave it 3 stars versus 2. And I loved Billy.

I've loved every one of Towles's books. He's such a talented writer. This one is a well-crafted Hero's Journey with characters worth investing in and atmospheric prose to make the story a bit enchanting. His dialogue is sharp and spot-on for effective character voice. Emmett and Billy's heartfelt journey along the Lincoln Highway and will be remembered. Highly recommend.

I really enjoyed A Gentleman in Moscow and I hoped to enjoy this one a well. Unfortunately, this book was a slog. I was expecting more of a brothers coming of age road trip and it wasn’t that at all. While some of the storylines were compelling, overall it felt full of fluff and filler. Sadly this one was disappointing for me.
