This is the second in the Isabel Dalhousie 'Philosophy Club' series. It has a little more about philosophical ideas than the first one, and I enjoyed it more, partly because of the twists and turns in the plot. The portrait of Edinburgh is one drawn by a gentle hand with affection for the virtues and faults of the society in which he lives. A good read, but not one to change one's philosophy of life, or ignite the world.

I didn't enjoy this book so much. I think he lacks the love for Edinburgh he obviously has for Botswana.

This is one of the Isabel Dalhousie mysteries written by Alexander McCall Smith, author of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. This is the first of the Dalhousie series that I am reading ... and it's good, but not quite as good a the Ladies Detective Agency series, which is somewhat more exotic, given its African setting. Possibly this book is a bit too "English" for me, but as a mystery, it is - as are all of McCall Smith's books - entertaining and a quick read
