Yeah! One of my favorite books of all time! This is the beginning of a series that started as a dare: AMS was challenged to write a story a day for The Scotsman newspaper. And this is the product of that dare. No one should be able to write this well that quickly, but miraculously AMS manages it with supreme ease. Three stars... four stars....?
It was between the two for me. This is significantly different from his other books in that it was written to be serialised in a daily newspaper, because of a conversation at a literary party with Armistead Maupin.
The preface almost put me off because it seemed to be name-dropping, and I feared McCall Smith had lost touch with the "real world".
It is something one often sees with popular musicians and other artistic sections of the population. They start with a grit ...more

The book was interesting and funny at times, but i felt it wasn't as good as his 1st ladies detective books.
