I loved this first book in McCall Smith's "Scotland Street" series--I don't know why I didn't start it sooner, since I love his "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" books and wait very impatiently for each new one to appear. Having this series to catch up on will help fill that time until I can have more Mma Ramotswe adventures.

This series has the same gentleness one finds in the Mma Ramotswe books; there is an unusual calmness and thoughtfulness to McCall Smith's writing which I find very appealing.

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook - I love the narrator's lovely Scottish accent, and parts of this quirky story made me laugh out loud. I have to admit that having spent some time in Edinburgh myself brought a lot to the story for me. I am probably the only person in the universe that didn't absolutely love the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency books - I like this series much better so far. I will definitely keep reading the Scotland Street books. ...more

A reviewer named Mark probably summed it up best - 44 Scotland Street is somewhat like Seinfeld in Edinburgh. There is perhaps not the strong degree of off-the-wall zaniness that marked Seinfeld, but we are looking at two entirely different cultures. A genuinely pleasant, charming read as McCall Smith introduces us to the inhabitants of 44 Scotland Street. I'm looking forward to the continuation of the series. ...more

I loved reading a serialized novel. I enjoyed the differences in pacing and development. I am certainly more committed to visiting Edinburgh.

I liked this a lot and have already requested the second book from the library. My favorite series of his is still the philosophy series - it has more likeable characters in it and I do like likeable characters ;-)! I hope the series lets us follow Pat and Matthew and I'd love to read more about Pat's dad - he was a wonderful character! ...more
