I loved this first book in McCall Smith's "Scotland Street" series--I don't know why I didn't start it sooner, since I love his "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" books and wait very impatiently for each new one to appear. Having this series to catch up on will help fill that time until I can have more Mma Ramotswe adventures.

This series has the same gentleness one finds in the Mma Ramotswe books; there is an unusual calmness and thoughtfulness to McCall Smith's writing which I find very appealing.

The way this book was written as a continuing story for a newspaper makes it even more fascinating reading. There is a "clifffhanger" at the end of every short chapter. ...more

The intervening years have added an additional star to my first rating. The book did the job I wanted it to by whetting my appetite for Edinburgh even more. Perhaps I will even step foot on Scotland Street myself. If only Big Lou’s Coffee Shop existed in real life…

almost finished with this one . . . I really love it and am so glad that it is no. one in the series!! A McCall Smith has become one of my faves. :)

Finished 44 Scotland today and can't wait to start the second in this series! Smith creates such fabulously interesting characters. :)

Pretty good book, interesting characters. Good flow considering it started out as an on-going story in a newspaper.
