Lackey's worldbuilding and magic system/rules are well-done; I'll give her that, at least. But these few positives are marred by poor characterization (especially with the villains, like the laughably evil Paul), lots of redundant, tedious description, and a plot that doesn't seem to go anywhere (no thanks in part to the sleep-inducing, pages-long info dumps on mundane details like Rose's breakfast and wardrobe).
