Thirteen-year-old Jack Baker is still processing his mother's unexpected death when his father, a military officer, moves him from their Kansas home to a Maine boarding school near his base. Jack tries to cover up his ignorance about boats and the water, but his classmates quickly realize that he knows little about those things. As he wanders through the school, looking for a way to fit in, he becomes increasingly drawn to the mysterious and eccentric Early Auden. Early plays records, certain si

A beautifully written book about two boys who forge a friendship at a boarding school in Maine circa 1945. Jack hails from Kansas and finds himself at boarding school after the death of his mother. Early has suffered losses as well and is a bit of a loner.
During a school break the two boys set off on the journey of a lifetime trekking parts of the Appalachian Trail in search of Early's brother, Fisher, a former legend at the boarding school among all the boys, he is thought to be dead.

Manipulative, implausible, shark-jumping tripe that made me cry and is often -- not always (WTF, Gunnar and your moving-target accent) beautifully written. Way overworked, yet strangely affecting.
(Very much the kidlit version of O Brother, Where Art Thou -- and as a stylized and clearly magic realism movie, this would work better, actually -- and Pi's story had a whiff of Pratchett's Nation) ...more

This was quite the adventure story with an elaborate, layered plot. The characters were well developed and interesting. "Our stories are all intertwined. It's just a matter of connecting the dots."

The author's first book won the Newbery a few years ago, and this one wins Printz Honor 1/27/14. Mixed reviews among my goodreads friends.

Similar to Moon Over Manifest, the story weaves together several seemingly random elements into one moving finale. I honestly wasn't sure who some of the mysterious figures were until the end. Early himself was a great character, filled with secrets, quirks and emotional depth. I think I liked Manifest better, but that's probably because it contains far more female characters with whom I can relate. This book was more male oriented.

I just could not get into this book. I really liked Moon Over Manifest, and I wanted to like this one as well. There were too many coincidences when the story all wrapped up, yet somehow though it should have been a happy ending, it didn't feel like one. My review is as jumbled as I felt this book was. Sorry.
