What Members Thought

I should first caution anyone who wishes to read this book that he is the son and nephew of two sisters who run a mortuary, and the descriptions of the embalming process are quite graphic, so this book isn’t really for the squeamish. Also, some of the violence that inevitably will take place is rather graphically described. However, a basic understanding of the embalming process is necessary, so don’t skip those descriptions if you can endure them.

Wow. Simply put, Wow.
If you like suspense, if you like horror in any way, you will LOVE this book! This book kept me guessing the whole time.
First off, we have our main character, John Wayne Cleaver, a 15 year old boy, fighting off serial killer urges. He has a therapist, Dr. Neblin that he sees, to talk out his thoughts. John also has a set of rules that he follows, trying to fight off the killing urges.
But it is hard. His mother is a mortician. She prepares dead bodies all the time. At first ...more

The idea for the story is so interesting and creepy. I was disappointed at a plot twist, but I don't want to say what it was and give it away. It took away some of the enjoyment for me and made the book not as good as I thought it could have been. I stole this description from an online reviewer:
John Wayne Cleaver is not your typical high school boy. He is a sociopath, incapable of empathy. This combined with his fascination with death, fueled by living above his mother’s mortuary, has led him t ...more

This is one of those books where I really want to give it more stars because I stayed up late finishing it and was never once bored, and the writing is top notch...but without revealing major spoilers, it just takes an unexpected, turn that I really didn't love.
But... I still liked it! Almost a lot! Like a teenage "Dexter," the protagonist in this series is not normal. Quite possibly he is a psychopath and on the verge of becoming a serial killer. I expected this book to be less serious and more ...more

Okay, this book was REALLY creepy. I am sure the author knows that. So, I am solely basing my review on the writing style. Dan Wells is a good writer. I think it would be unfair to give a review based on the content being something I usually read, since I read the blurp and knew what I was getting into.

I was really worried about this book, but I'm glad I finally read it. Scary, spooky, gross, yes. But, fascinating!

Four words- dark and disturbingly brilliant.
As a horror book written by an LDS author, something not often seen, the story carries the theme of overcoming the natural man. The "bad guy" is revealed halfway through the book and carries a twist that I was not expecting. A fascinating read that left a definite impression on me and sent a number of different thoughts roaming around in my head for hours. I'll most likely read the other books in the trilogy, though I'll do it with both trepidation and ...more

I loved the development of the main character, it was incredible. But, when the twist of the paranormal entered, I couldn't bring myself to read anymore. They just didn't seem to flow together and I was immediately bored.

Great book, but I didn't love the narrator. This one was better in print.
