Yes, it is full of magic, but I almost can't call it fantasy; it felt more like historical fiction that happened to have magic in it. It is told in a matter-of-fact, clear way that completely drew me in almost from the beginning. The first couple of chapters are a little slow, but boy, does it take off from there!

Holy moly. This has to be one of the most impressive books I've ever read. It is well-researched, both in terms of time period, military history and politics (and magical history, of course!) The writing is very Austenesque (down to spellings like "connexions", "chuse", "shew" etc.), the characters three-dimensional and flawed and the plot unpredictable.
