What Members Thought

I loved it! It is a fantastical history of magic in England, written in a Victorian style. The history is accurate and well-researched, with magical events woven in. Strongly recommend it!

Mr. Norwell, a magician from Yorkshire, decides that magic needs a shiny new reputation having been mangled at the hands of street peddlers and the like. So that is the beginning of this massive story, which starts off with bang. Of course Norwell needs a pupil and Jonathan Strange arrives on the scene. I very much liked Jonathan and was excited by his presence. The best parts were where their philosophies about magic separated and created opportunities for alliances and conflict.

Yes, it is full of magic, but I almost can't call it fantasy; it felt more like historical fiction that happened to have magic in it. It is told in a matter-of-fact, clear way that completely drew me in almost from the beginning. The first couple of chapters are a little slow, but boy, does it take off from there!
I haven't been this enchanted (pun intended) with a story for quite a while. It's brilliantly written, with remarkable, developed characters, a broad setting and the feeling of an immen ...more
