I struggled through the first half of this book, mostly because of the writing style which is a bit on the heavy and dramatic side (not nearly as “modern” as my homie Tolstoy). Also… why on earth do Russians insist on interchangeably referring to characters by their first names, family names, and pet names…?
The old (read “public domain”) translation by Constance Garnett is not helping the flow either and requires to use of a dictionary in parts (at least for me…). It was the price to pay for ha ...more

It must be such a privilege to be able to read this masterpiece in its own language.
Oh friends, where do I start… I finally finished reading Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment and I’m madly in love with it. The story, the characters, the ideas, monologues, it’s beyond words. Considering Dostoevsky wrote this during political turmoil at that time in Russia and was highly influenced by the complexity of his life experience… this was quite a read.

It's a good book, but I read it after I read Brothers Karamazov so I think that tainted my expectations. I enjoy the character development and some of the overarching themes, but Doestovsky's craft is not fully honed yet. Some characters like Sonia are a little more two dimensional than I really wanted them to be.
