I waver between 4 and 5 stars for this, because it's so good that I WANT to give it five stars. If it had ended after Part V and not had the epilogue, it would definitely be at least 4.5, but after the epilogue I had to give it only four.

It's leaps and bounds better (and easier to read!) than Brothers Karamozov. In C&P, Dostoyevsky lets the story moralize for him and doesn't spend as much time having each of the characters monologue and preach to the reader. Oh yes, they do preach, but it's MUCH

I realized I didn't write a review even though I even participated in a book club with this book. Our book club was divided on whether the main character (and all the other characters in poverty) were pardonable or relatable. I had to agree with Nabokov on his view of Dostoevsky's characters. Like the Karamazov brothers, I found most of the characters in this book neither pardonable nor relatable. I think this has more to do with Dostoevsky's style of writing than the characters' personality or ...more
