Boy, what a ride! It probably started out well for me because of so many similarities to The Woman in White, which I loved both times I read it, and then after the first major twist it took on a life of its own. This is definitely no Collins or Dickens, as far as content, but I imagine its closer to what either of them might have been able to write if they hadn't had as much censorship in their era. Much less ridiculous than Tipping the Velvet even if it was still wildly improbable :-) There were a few twists but many of them were well sign-posted so if you are paying attention you aren't really going to be totally surprised.
Overall I enjoyed it enough to rate it 3 stars; not sure if I'm all that keen to read any more of her works though. Maybe The Night Watch? ...more
