What Members Thought

Finally finished this mega-chunkster! Almost gave it 4 or 4.5 stars just for the long-winded bits that dragged on here and there, but after having read the last 50 pages I could not give it less than 5 stars. After all the misery of what the various characters experienced, the ending was very satisfying. Definitely an epic read!

About a quarter of the way through I watched the first 3 of 6 episodes of the PBS Masterpiece Theater production of Les Miserables, so difference than the musical that I had seen on stage years ago. When I was about half done with the book, I couldn't wait any longer and watched the last three episodes. So well done. I was disappointed in the recent movie that I watched afterwards, that was based on the musical. I was impressed by the fact that it was a very readable book, with a lot of thought

Finally I finished this magnificent epic. No poor words of mine could possibly do justice to this marvellous work but I will say that it was worth the wait. This is my first Victor Hugo and I have been just blown away by the detail and life he breathes into his work. His treatise on Waterloo which almost deserved to be a short book in its own right, his love of Paris, the thieves cant; everything was just wonderful.

This is a great book and there's a lot to love in it. But much of the book didn't grab me and didn't move me. Ultimately, I'm glad I read it but I'm also glad to be done!
