This is a rather beautiful book about the discovery of self as well as the immigrant experience. Instead of star-crossed lovers via West Side story, the main characters are a golem and a jinni (hence the title). The use of the two magical and culturally based creatures is rather interesting, in particular, since each has a tie (strong in one case than the other) in being used as a slave or servant. A quibble I have with Goodreads is that I can't change my opinion on books when I reread them. When I first read The Golem and the Jinni I gave it five stars. On this rereading I'd give it four stars; I still liked it, but I am aware of it's weaknesses.
