I can't give this an honest, thoughtful assessment, because I was distracted by War and Peace halfway through. But it's worth at least 3 stars. I really liked the treatment of Pilate and his prisoner, but imagine I've missed the significance of the rest of the story. ...more

Much of Mikhail Bulgakov's "The Master and Margarita" was lost on me, I fear. My knowledge of the Soviet Union under Stalin is nowhere near as comprehensive as it would need to be for me to understand more than a few of the allusions and references used by Bulgakov. I think I would need to read the novel as part of a university course in Russian literature, or perhaps Russian history, to truly appreciate it.

Gosh this is a great book! But I don't think this version is the best translation; it is a little clunky.

Any book with a demon-cat in trousers has got to be a good one. ...more
