I almost didn't buy this book. I got my copy at the used book stall at the local Spring Fair. I was little torn about it. The phrase "New York Times Bestseller" usually means I won't like it (take, for instance, my reaction to The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane). Then I read the back and looked at the inside cover. Anything that uses Arthur Rackham (Illustrator) pictures deserves a shot, and it was only two dollars.

Time traveling within several generations of one family to unravel a many layered mystery is just one aspect of this book that makes it a compelling read. The three main characters, Eliza, Nell and Cassandra, are fascinating. When halfway through the tale turns darker and ever darker, the peril is palpable as ghosts from the past begin to inhabit every available space. Not done with this one yet but can't stop. I loved this fairy tale... and the many tales between the stories. The book has three seperate stories going on about three wonderful women... one at the turn of the century, one that happens during the 1970s, and then modern times. Kate Morton does an excellent job weaving the characters into a riveting mystery. Great story!!
