Friends had been placing the Dragon Riders of Pern books in my hands for years and I'd never bothered to read them. They were forever implanted in my brain, thanks to some Funny or Die or Buzzfeed article, as "Mary Sue Gets a Dragon". There was also some tale of dragon sex, or something equally lurid.

But after stomaching too many Victorian novels and Cormac McCarthy Westerns, I was all for a dragon riding Mary Sue.

I honestly wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I've heard good things for a long time, but on my first attempt to read it, I was scared away by the prologue. It was too history-book science-y for me...which I'm sure is probably not an unknown thing for science fiction readers, but I tend to stick on the fantasy side. Thankfully, I gave it another try, and after the prologue this book was far more like fantasy than like science fiction.
