This is really like Indy Jones, though unlike her adult books, Allende tells too much instead of showing.
What is interesting about this book is the amount of background as well as action Allende packs into the book. During the journey in the Amazon, the characters of both Alex and Nadia are totally real as are most of the supporting characters. A good quick read for an adult

Allende está de moda, creo yo. Si no fuera de esta forma, no sé por qué entonces encontraría yo tantos tomos y libros, tantas ediciones viejas y nuevas, colecciones eternas, quien sabe digo yo.

I tried, I really tried to like this book! But I just couldn't. I don't know if it is the translation or if Allende just isn't meant to write young adult novels, but the language was very stilted and uninspiring. The premise is interesting enough - a Califorian teenager has to accompany his eccentric anthropologist grandmother and a mixed bunch of other characters on an expedition through the Amazonian jungle to find a legendary "beast" - but the story never got me hooked.
